To Be Peculiar
A Compilation from Ellen G. White
The High Calling
“Seventh-day Adventists, who
profess to be looking for and loving the appearing of Christ, should not follow
the course of worldlings. These are no criterion for commandment keepers. … Commandment-keeping
Adventists occupy a peculiar, exalted position. John viewed them in holy vision
and thus described them: ‘Here are they that keep the commandments of God, and
the faith of Jesus.’
“The Lord made a special covenant with ancient
“As we read the word of God, how plain that God's people are peculiar and distinct from the unbelieving world around them. Our position is interesting and fearful; living in the last days, how important that we imitate the example of Christ, and walk even as he walked.”Spiritual Gifts (, vol. 4b, pp. 76, 77)
“Read again Titus 2:13-15. We are here brought down to the last days, when God is purifying unto Himself a peculiar people.” (Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 283)
God’s Peculiar
People Will Be Distinctly Separate from the World
“Separation from the friendship and spirit of the world is needful for us if we would be united to the Lord and abide in him. Our strength and our prosperity consist in our being connected with the Lord, chosen and accepted of Him. There can be no union between light and darkness. God intends that His people shall be a peculiar people, separate from the world, and be living examples of holiness, that the world may be enlightened, convicted, or condemned, according as they treat the light given them.” (Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 689)
“Christ's followers are required to come out from the world, and be separate, and touch not the unclean, and they have the promise of being the sons and daughters of the Most High, members of the royal family….A profession of Christianity is nothing in the sight of God; but true, humble, willing obedience to His requirements designates the children of His adoption, the recipients of His grace, the partakers of His great salvation. Such will be peculiar, a spectacle unto the world, to angels, and to men. Their peculiar, holy character will be discernible, and will distinctly separate them from the world, from its affections and lust.” (Ibid., p. 441)
“God promised to bless Solomon if he would follow right ways. But Solomon departed from the right, marrying idolatrous women and going to other nations for workmen to build the temple. God was greatly displeased with Solomon's idolatrous connection with the world. As Solomon was blessed while he kept separate from the world, so we shall be blessed while we remain a distinct people.” (Manuscript Releases, vol. 19, p. 53)
To Appear Before the
World as a Holy and Separate People
“At this time the church is to put on her beautiful garments—‘Christ our righteousness.’ There are clear, decided distinctions to be restored and exemplified to the world in holding aloft the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. The beauty of holiness is to appear in its native luster in contrast with the deformity and darkness of the disloyal, those who have revolted from the law of God. Thus we acknowledge God and recognize His law, the foundation of His government in heaven and throughout His earthly dominions. His authority should be kept distinct and plain before the world, and no laws are to be acknowledged that come in collision with the laws of Jehovah. If in defiance of God's arrangements the world be allowed to influence our decisions or our actions, the purpose of God is defeated. However specious the pretext, if the church waver here, there is written against her in the books of heaven a betrayal of the most sacred trusts, and treachery to the
“Christians are to stand out distinct
from the world as God's standard bearers, showing in their lives the influence
of the transforming grace of Christ. They are raised up together to sit with
Christ in heavenly places that they may reveal to the world, to angels, and to
men an enduring representation of the eternal world. They are to hold forth the
Word of life, warning men of the binding claims of God's law. God wants His
servants to be of a high order. He wants them to obey laws of a higher order
than the laws of the world--laws which are the transcript of His character….
“Those who really believe in Jesus
will be colaborers with Him, showing to the unfallen worlds and to the fallen
world a character which is after the divine similitude. They are to show that
they have a higher, holier order of enjoyment than the world can bestow….
“We should remember that the world will judge us by what we appear to be.” (Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 397)
“Not only by their profession, but by their character and dress, all are to have a winning influence. They are made trustees for the world, executors of the will of One who has bequeathed sacred truth to men. Would that all could feel the dignity and glory of their God-given trust.” (Ibid., vol. 5, p. 207)
“God designs that His grace should be made manifest in the believer, that through the Christlike character of individual members, the church may become the light of the world.” (Fundamentals of Christian Education, p. 203)
“The world will not be convinced
by what the pulpit teaches, but by what the church lives. The path to heaven is
dark or bright, just in proportion as the church gives forth a clear and
strong, or doubtful, fitful light. The preacher in the desk announces the
theory of the gospel, but the practical piety of the church demonstrates the
power of truth, showing its real value.
“The gospel is a system of practical
truths destined to work great changes in human character. If it does not work
the transformation in life, in habits, and practice, it is no truth to those
who claim to believe it. Man must be sanctified through the truth….
“Connected with the God of wisdom and love, you will demonstrate to the world the fact that you are not living for this world, but for that which is not temporal but eternal.” (That I May Know Him, p. 90)
